Stuff [May. 4th, 2009|08:19 pm]

[mood | tired]
[music |Hold On Dub - The Aggrovators]

Dear god I'm tired.
A weekend involving walking from Hebden Bridge up to a camping barn just below Stoodley Pike on Saturday, then much running around of children, followed by sleeping in a tent and being woken by midnight tig at about 1-00 am then torrential rain at 4-00, a rather breezy period at around 5-00 then hordes of kids at 6-30.
Walk up to Stoodley Pike in the morning - half a mile as the crow flies but then the crow doesn't have to go down a valley, then even further up the otherside in the face of 50 mile an hour winds. Walk down the valley to Todmorden (involving a change in the weather from 1 of the kids having to be taken back due to the first signs of hypothermia to catching a slight suntan due to the heat and sunshine in the valley), catch train to Manchester, see The Specials (wonderfully good going again at Leeds), dance a lot, be utterly outraged at the Apollo bar (£3-60 for a can of Tuborg poured into a cup) then back to travelodge to fall over.
Brief spell of shopping in Manchester - 2 Billy Childish CDs, 1 dub re-issue box set the Evolution Of Dub (4 albums remastered, in slipcases reproducing their original covers and a nice booklet giving the background to the music), and the Wooden Shjips album Dos (early Suicide/Loop/Spacemen 3 type stuff) which I bought simply because it sounded so good in Piccadilly records where I was at the time.
Next week it's camping all over again in the wilds of the Gloucestershire on the Welsh Border near the village of Redbook. The theme is an Enchanted Forest, so youngest daughter (who will be going and having a day off school as running around a field full of hippies and crusties drunk on cider is a better education for life in general than being sat in a classroom for a day) will be going as a forest zombie. Hopefully I can be accused of being a bad parent, and then point out that she is merely expressing her creativ side and who am I to interfere.
Unfortunately I won't be able to atend the AD reunion gig at the Fenton, but hey I'll wear my Nazi Goths T-shirt anyway. Good luck for it Joel and see you soon comrade (and indeed fellow steward now - I've become a union steward for Benefits in bradford)
Finally I re-activated my facebook account again as it seems the easiest way to keep in touch with some people and also to keep track of various events. No doubt I'll delete it again it an alcohol fuelled despair at the shiteness of it all, but for now I'll try to be good with it and at least click the ignore button more often.
OK done for now, nighty night

[music |Soulsavers Revival]

Just back from Barcelona due to the joys of Super Flexi at work. Quick round up as follows:
1. 5 days is not remotely long enough for such an awesome city.
2. I will now be going to see the Sisters in Leeds, if the support band are Ulterior then I will be watching them and during the Sisters set I will be going to the bar during anything that has not been released officially - the term dirge like applies, perhaps Andrew was just resting his voice. The rest of it was shit hot though.
3. There will be photos posted to Flickr but not now.
4. I've discovered I have a 6 shot burst function on the camera on my N95 8Gb phone, which is fantastic for action shots of Fountains (this being one of the highlights of Barcelona - a Fountain display to classical music!)
More to follow, I'm now off to the Sunday meeting at t'club.

I've just deleted the facebook thingy I had as none more black. Bloody horrible site, if I want to tell people about something then I'll post it here, and if I want only a few people to know about it then I'll mark it friends only. If I want everyone to know then I'll mail em all and or text em. 3 bloody times I had to enter the "security words", until I realised I had to give a reason for leaving: in the end I put other, and when then pressed to tell them why in the little box I just put no. Back to vaguely text based stuff for me.

Gonna be a bad year for the eardrums [Jan. 9th, 2009|12:14 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Location |Kitchen]
[mood | giddy]
[music |Hawkwind - You Shouldn't Do That]

In a fit of madness I've gone and booked 2 Hawkwind related gigs already this year (it's their 40th anniversary) and that doesn't even include the 40th anniversary tour which is shaping up already to be visited repeatedly.
Bad enough 2 gigs you say, but it gets worse. 1 is in March in London 3days before I go see the Sisters in Barcelona which will mean mucho cramming to ensure flexitime is in the positive, and then the second gig - the actual date 40 years on from their first gig is on 29/08/09. That is August Bank Holiday Saturday. Sooooo Bad in a number of ways lets count them:
1. Day after my birthday, not a good day to travel, my stars will say HANGOVER.
2. Halfway through Infest: Infest Friday for my birthday (may be a little bit inebriated), get up go to London for gig on Saturday - oh and am I going to be miffed if that's the day The Young Gods play - then come back Sunday and go to Infest after mental gig.
3. Their first ever gig was in Notting Hill. So where is the gig? Porchester Halls.
In Notting Hill.
On the 2nd day of Carnival.
The mind bogles (sic) at the thought of 600 hardcore hawkwind fans let loose around Carnival after seeing Hawkwind-related stuff all day - still the sales of Oxo cubes and Parsley will probably hit a new high...
4. Sunday at Infest with crazed Hawkind idiot (I took weeks to come down after the Hawkestra thing in 2001!) could result in whole festival moving abroad (eg south of Watford Gap) next year.
What's that you say? Don't go to Infest then? but how would people know it's my birthday (Friday) or how good the gig was (Sunday).
Here's looking forward to a quieter Infest this year - for Friday and Sunday. Saturday is gonna be rammed.

2009 - Don't go out on the water [Jan. 2nd, 2009|11:52 pm]
Well, I was going to go to Friday Flock (and last night's Bad Moon Rising) but in a fit of extreme sensibleness, I have decided to stay in and save money. This is partly due to lots of gigs coming up this year - it's shaping up to be even busier than last year, and that involved a fair whack of traveling to gigs including staying over a couple of times in hotels, already we've (I say we but I mostly mean me) got booked Hawklords in London(it's a Hawkwind type thing), The Sisters in Barcelona (had to do 4 nights for entire family in Barcelona to get away with that one!), The Specials in Manchester as well as Infest.
However, the main item of expense is likely to be a 30' narrowboat which, while initially cheap - that is to say, for a 30' narrowboat - is also likely to need money throwing at it to get it to an acceptable level of comfort, i.e. so it doesn't leak too badly, or rot away in the next 2 or 3 years. We were going to wait until October, but this looks like it may be the one for us, so at the moment it's penny pinching time. Yes it will be painted black, although Sharon insists on at least a bit of gold trim.

Rare Burst of stuff [Oct. 5th, 2008|11:51 pm]
In a Caffeine (god I hate being dry) induced burst of writing here's one I nicked from Big Daz.

01. What is essential for your happiness?
Alcohol, music, reading matter, sex.

02. What clothes are you wearing at the moment?
Combats, Diesel Sweeties T-shirt

03. What games did you recently finish?
Neverwinter Nights 2 - Mask Of The Betrayer.

04. What is your favourite scent?
Beer mixed with garlic from a fresh curry. And 15 year old Fine Oak Macallan.

05. What books are you reading at the moment?
Bill Drummond - 17. A fascinating diatribe about music (especially recorded music), nostalgia and art, and so far it makes a lot of sense to me about why I'm always searching for new music; also why I get on better with people who feel the same about music - never being satisifed with listening to the same old nostalgia trip (that's why Infest kicks Whitby ass every time.
Love And Rockets collections and the complete Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers just because I enjoy them.

06. What do you drink the most?
Beer, water, red wine, whisky

07. Do you trust easily?
Not at first. then too much.

08. Who was your first big crush?
Samantha.

09. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Somebody who was allowed to listen to extraordinary amounts of good music, have good sex, drink good booze, eat good spicy food and read good books. Dunno why I can be such a miserable shit then as I manage those pretty much most of the time. Except possibly the music thing - there's just too much crap goth music in the world.

10. Do you have a good body-image?
Could do with more hair on top and less of a beer gut, but then the latter may be related to a number of aspects to do with the previous entry.

11. Do you have an LJ crush?
No.

12. What websites do you visit daily?
Live Journal, BBC, National Rail live departures for Frizinghall Station. Ebay to browse the boat porn.

13. Random pet peeve?
Places that charge as much or more for soft drinks as they do for alcohol.

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
Big Daz didn't tag me but I pinched it from him so here goes: I always think of him as sociable, slightly maudlin (that's a good thing) and and appreciative of the good things in life. (see entry no.1)

15. What's the last song that got stuck in your head?
Jesus want's you for a friend. I blame Deeper_than_red for that one.

16. What's your favourite item of clothing?
My formerly black hat.

17. What's better: to give or to receive?
Yes.

18. What's the book you've read most times?
It's a toss up between Watchmen and Dreams of Sex & Stage Diving.

19. Is there anything you want so bad right now?
Alcohol

20. What should you be doing right now?
Sleeping.

21. Whats the meaning behind your LJ username/name/nicknames you go by?
I like Spinal Tap - a lot. And I have been known to play music under the moniker nonemoreblack hence the dj bit on the end as some other bugger got the nonemoreblack tag before I did.

Quick catch up [Oct. 5th, 2008|10:02 pm]
[Current Location |Kitchen]
[mood | contemplative]
[music |African Dub - Joe Gibbs & the Professionals]

Hey y'all
A quick catch up for people. I'm currently off alcohol (but not work) due to the antibiotics I'm on because I have an infected elbow (elbow bursitis).
As a result of this I've been feeling a bit weird recently, and grumpier than normal as well, partially due to tiredness from blood poisoning and partially due to lack of booze, therefore apologies to anybody who saw me at Black Sheep last week or at any other time recently, particularly nigel mouse, Mister vodka and of course Viv.
On the bonus side of life, went shopping today in Leeds thanks to a large refund from E-On energy (there just aren't enough comic/book/record shops in Bradford to slake our consumerist lusts), and purchased a remarkably large number of roots reggae and dub CDs. I love the goth scene still (stop sniggering at the back Mister vodka), but at the moment I'm tending towards weird post-rock stuff such as Chrome Hoof, Circle and other similarly drone improvisational stuff, and obscure roots reggae/dub with a smattering of North African blues such as Tinariwen. Oh and I got tickets to go see Sly and Robbie the two most prolific musicians ever (no really) at Leeds Stylus in two weeks and then in December it's the Skatellites with Iration Steppas supporting. In and around that there will also be Leonard Cohen, Hawkwind and probably trips to Friday Flock to catch bands also, so it's not all extra loud bass.
Finally can I just say a big thank you to Paul Newman, whose recent death allowed the family to go out for a meal today at Fellicini's as I had him in the works draw for the celebrity most likely to die next.

What's Goin' On [Jul. 20th, 2008|07:50 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Location |The Kitchen]
[mood | contemplative]
[music |Leonard Cohen - The Sisters Of Mercy]

Hey folks, how's hings out there in Journal land. For once I'm not moaning or whinging, except possibly about how life is too feckin' busy.

Part of the problem is the sheer number of gigs this year that are on the must see/do list, I've already been to Nick Cave in Birmingham, Hawkind & Gogol Bordello in Manchester, Diamanda Galas in London, and that's just the big gigs(plus I missed Public Enemy, Ministry and Woolstock III due to being out of the country) there has also been stoner/drone supremos Circle and any number of other noisy stuff at the 1in12.

Next week sees the clash of all time, with Hawkind holding the third Hawkfest, the Nephilim playing in London, the Sisters playing in Belgium and Action Directe at t'club. Fortunately all of this is academic as I'm djing at the wedding of a couple of friends, in a stroke of luck though there are 2 of us at the do in Saltaire, so I'm planning on nipping down to the club to catch AD in their last ever performance, then back to Saltaire to do the drunken dancing set towards the end.

Then there's the rest of the year - my better half is buggering off on August 8th, which means a 3 week stint of hardcore giggage and stupidity, although before that I'm at Bad Moon Rising on 31/07/08 & 07/08/08 kicking off the ceremonies (I think that's right, I'm sure Mistervodka will correct me). Once they've gone there's Transmission & the gig beforehand, Djing at Black Sheep on the 10th, then a few days before Spearhead in Sheffield on the 19th (the Tuesday) then from Thursday the 21st it's all go with Bad Moon Rising and Infest taking me through to the Bank Holiday and my birthday on the Thursday after Infest - I may put an appearance in at Bad Moon Rising. Then on the final weekend on August there's Bingley Music Live - Happy Mondays on the Saturday, then Echo and the Bunnymen on the Sunday (plus the Sunday gig is free), followed by the return of the family from their jollies abroad.

Then what you cry, is there any rest for this poor old goth - nope as the autumn tour schedules are already filling with the Abyssinian & Dillinger doing a double header tour in September, Saltaire Festival towards the end of September, the Boss Sounds reggae festival in October (for those of you who aren't aware I have quite a fondness for roots reggae/ska/dub). November sees another trip to Birmingham for the mighty Leonard Cohen (just don't ask how much the tickets cost) and December sees the return of Hawkwind although this time I'm planning on Rock City rather than the Academy 2 in Manchester - it's a superior venue for the Hawks.

In between all this I'm sure I'll also try to venture forth for the odd beer or two, so if you see me you may have to nudge me awake - "what you having?" usually does the trick.

Be Seeing You.

[music |Edge Of The Eighties Comp]

Hi Folks
In a rare bout of promotion it's the 1in12 Club's 20th anniversary of opening the building on Albion Street and amazingly it still hasn't collapsed yet. There is a whole weekend of entertainment/something to do whilest drinking stupidly cheap alcohol as outlined below:

Friday is the 20th anniversary 1980's disco. Comes as you were in 1980 (or, for
the younger members, as your parents were) and listen to all the great tunes
from the dawn of Albion Street. Bring your own buffet so you can sit-down and
talk over your accomplishments of the past two decades with fellow
high-achievers (there will be quiet places in the club, as well as the thumping
disco pranks on the event floor).

Saturday is a huge festival of very loud music, including Geriatric Unit /
Beginning Of The End / Whole In The Head / Gusto Mastivo / Lazarus Blackstar +
more t.b.c.

On Sunday there'll be a vegan fry-up from 9.30 until about 12.00, followed by a
proper Sunday Lunch in the afternoon (tickets in advance required - available
at the bar) and some kind of quiz/film (or both) event in the evening. {The
self-appointed projectionist wants to show Fahrenheit 451 but wiser people have
probably had better ideas already}.
I'll be djing Friday night, so there will be lots of cheese, goth, metal and other stuff. Plus in a burst of fatherly pride Friday & part of Sunday is being organised by eldest daughter (who will also be responsible for serving cocktails) so at least a smidgeon of promotion needs to be done by me. Further 1in12 club info is here:
<http://www.bd9sound.co.uk/1in12events.html>

And don't forget Cauda in 2 weeks & Action directe in 5 weeks.
Oh, don't ever ask me to do online promotion either....

Trades Description Act [Jan. 7th, 2007|12:25 am]
In these post modernist days, with clever Marketing, a use of language that would make George Orwell boggle that not only did he predict the future but that his diatribe would become the standard by which these liars are measured ("Are you in Advertising or Marketing? then kill yourself nw and do the rest of us a favour - no this is not a joke" - Mr Bill Hicks) I have seen something which does exactly what it says on the box.
Snakes On A Plane.
It's not great cinema (but it's pretty good entertainment), it does what it says on the box.
Snakes. Plane. Samuel L Jackson.
Oh and its Eclectic Banana at the 1in12 Club this Saturday. The covers special, once again something that does what it says on the advertising. 4 Hours of covers. (if I can get the bloody thing working and find all the bits from around the club...)
